Healthcare chatbots for clinics
Most of the value a clinic gets from a chatbot is administrative: answering the same questions the front desk answers all day. Each job carries a different level of privacy and safety risk.

Common jobs and what each involves
| Job | Patient data involved | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Hours, location, parking, accepted insurance | Usually none | Keeping answers current |
| Appointment requests | Name, contact details, reason for visit | BAA, minimum necessary, and how requests reach staff |
| Intake forms and reminders | Health history and identifiers | Security Rule safeguards and retention |
| Billing and payment questions | Account and balance details | Identity verification before disclosing anything |
| Symptom questions | Health information | Emergency routing and FDA’s device rules — see the medical chatbots page |

Starting small
A chatbot that only answers non-patient-specific questions (hours, directions, which plans the clinic accepts) avoids most of the HIPAA questions. Each step toward handling identifiable information — requests, forms, billing — adds a business associate agreement, a place in the risk analysis, and a decision about how long transcripts are kept.
Common questions
- Can a chatbot schedule appointments directly?
- Technically yes, if it is integrated with the practice’s systems. That integration means the vendor handles PHI, so a BAA and security review come first.
